MarsCon 2008
Posted Mar 3, 2008 - 18:21:08

NoBrandCon runs a room party at MarsCon every year, and this one was no different. As I did in 2007, I documented our now mildly infamous Party. All in all, it was a fun time -- except for one crazy person who should never be given the illusion of authority.
I know I haven't vlogged for a while, but I couldn't let this convention pass. To go with the classic format of this background text, the music in this installment was provided by, well, me - via a Happy Wednesday track that may or may not ever see release. It's just something I mixed once for the heck of it, and it doesn't even have a title. So yeah, no MP3 for you this time out.

Sorry.

Crysta sadly didn't make the trip with us to MarCon 2008 as she has an exam on Tuesday and had homework due, so that was too bad. It would have been nice to have her with us. Such is life sometimes though, and I was happy to see her when I got back to Eau Claire on Sunday afternoon.

The live webcast worked out well though, or at least I think so. If you you disagree (or agree) feel free to say something in the comments of this entry. I wanted to use LiveVideo.com's system, but the hotel's terrible internet connection just choked the LiveVideo.com live widget, so we used UStream.TV instead -- which worked better than expected. Ironically, it was the chat system that crapped out on me and I had to last minute replace the chat widget while on air.

Geh.

I think though that I'll be doing more live events, and try to make use of streaming technology more often. I might try LiveVideo.com's platform more in the future, as it just might have been the hotel, but I think the best place to find the TraegornTV stuff is just going to be right here on TRHOnline.com -- with whatever solution I choose embedded on the front page.

I think that will keep it fairly simple, y'know?

As I say in the video, the party was great. I love MarsCon and would recommend it to anyone. It has some of the best late night parties as well (at least if you're over 21) so it's fairly funn. The only complaint I have is the crazy blonde1 woman who was in the paramedic's uniform (again -- I don't know if she was an actual Paramedic or a staffer in costume -- in either case, she wasn't functioning in that capacity throughout this incident anyways). Seriously, MarsCon, don't let her on your staff again. I've been the staffing manager and floor manager for a few of NoBrandCon's past years, and if she had been one of my staffers, she would have been fired.

And not let back on staff the following year.

I will say the Con Director and everyone else on staff was gracious, nice, and awesome. They are very, very, very great people, and I just hope you guys stop letting this person ruin your otherwise good name.

Seriously.

Edit: I know I didn't mention the British Troops -- and I should have. I feel bad about that. There was a group of Soldiers from the UK who had a layover in the Twin Cities that night and were staying in the hotel -- they were going for retraining before getting shipped out overseas. For the record, those guys were absolutely awesome. I never really got any footage of them, so I didn't get them into the vlog -- but I want to say those guys made the night for a lot of us. I hope they enjoyed the party.

1 It has been pointed out to me that I may be wrong in my recollection about her hair color -- Toph remembers her being a brunette. Whatever. She was insane, and that's what matters.

I am pleased with the Knot Purple, and someday hope to have Liz make me one. One of my favorite things was that you checked the con director's id before letting her in, so she's all "Hey, these people are being responsible. It's all good." Way to follow your rules.

Also, you didn't mention the hottie British troops that were randomly at the hotel, or their totally awesome CO (I'm guessing that's who that was). That basically made my night.
I honestly didn't know I was carding the con director.  See, I'm a genius even when I don't know what's going on!

And yeah, those troops were awesome.
Yeah - I didn't get the British troops on film.  It's too bad really.
I was worried about the shear volume of military types wondering around ('cuz, you know, stereotypes and all), but it turned out far awesomer than I could have imagined.
