Written in response to the article "What in the...?" by Justin Greif, which appeared in The Flip Side Volume 1, Issue 6 (February 18th - March 2nd, 2004).I am writing in response to "Religion Bashing 101" by Justin Greif in Vol. 1, No. 6 issue of The Flip Side. The false generalizations presented in your articles (yes both of them) are quite appalling. I do hope you realize that Christianity is not the only organized religion, if not please feel free to take "Introduction to World Religions." To claim that science is superior to religion, or even to claim that religion is superior to science is asinine. This is due to the fact that when one looks at both, you realize they are both founded on the same basic principle...faith. There is a reason why it is called the theory of gravity, and not the law of gravity.
In the first article you naively criticize religion as nothing more than explanations of the unknown, and that science came to the rescue of humanity and brings us enlightenment. Yet you neglect to mention that science has not only been wrong but is constantly changing. When one theory is shown to be false, it is either modified or thrown away. Science does not provide us with any more real knowledge than religion. As to your attack on religion, that it is only there to gain money and power, I hope you realize that science has also been used to obtain money and power.
Your second article provides attempts to defend monotheistic religions against science. Just your opening line that states "...the idea of one God..." betrays your ignorance. As stated previously there are more religions available in the world than the western religions Islam, Judaism, and Christianity), the lack of acknowledgement of any religion other than Christianity (with the brief mention of Islam) is quite disturbing. I would think that you would want to use the history of Islam to help defend religion, such as the fact that most of our current scientific knowledge was kept safe and added to by the Muslims in the Middle Ages.
