The Road Less Traveled
by Bob Bourgeois and Lindsey Nelson
Candidates for Student Senate President and Vice President
Our platform differs from the other candidates in terms of new and innovative ideas and feasibility. We wanted to come into this election with a list of goals that, at the end of the year, we could in good conscience check off on our list. We came up with ideas that we and many other students feel strongly about, not promises that sound appealing to students and contain the sole purpose of securing votes. We offer not only social goals but also tangible outcomes: the creation of a freshmen Blugold informational course and increasing communication to students through the installation of televisions in the Davies student center are just two of our objectives.
The object of all of this is to set forth changes and advances for the students of this campus and to produce results. We have four main platform points: increasing student involvement and awareness, providing access to services, increasing university pride, and furthering academic achievement.
We disagree from the other candidates on few issues, but those that we disagree upon are very important issues. Our largest grievance regarding the other candidates is simply the idea that radiates from their campaigns--this being that leadership within Senate is inaccessible to anyone outside of Senate. We feel that our solid leadership backgrounds are more important to leading this campus than is knowledge of terms and policies. Terms and policies can be learned; leadership is ingrained.
Our experience and our fresh outlook set us apart from the other executive tickets. A common criticism from our counterparts is our area of experience. There seems to be a misconception built into Student Senate which we would like to alleviate. There are some that believe you must have a 'black belt' in Student Senate in order to represent our fellow students. We believe that in order to represent the student body to the fullest we must allow this organization to flourish based on the most fundamental and basic principle--this being the elimination of the intimidation that often accompanies Student Senate as a whole.
We believe that our passionate connection to a diverse group of students helps us to take the form of a propelling force which would encourage any student who may have been hesitant about Senate to delve into it. Our leadership experience has given us the opportunity to visit other campuses across Wisconsin and the United States as a whole. This experience allows us to see the possibilities of our campus and have a large network of information.
We see the accomplishments of Student Senate and have been affected by the foundation that has been laid thus far. Change can be a scary thing for those who have been comfortably sustained by the organization. Despite this, in order to reach a greater number of students and to create considerable change there needs to be people who have a vision unlike any other, and the drive to go after it. We have proven far beyond the other candidates our resilience and our willingness to do whatever it takes!
As we sat down to discuss the pros and cons of running for president and vice president we established that this campaign is not something that would be 'cool' or a resume booster; it is our duty as leaders on this campus. We have the advantage of having vital leadership experience, in addition to having the unique outlook of "outsiders" to Student Senate. We have the ability to see what those in the inner circle of Senate may not have the ability to see, and this is what makes us confident in our platform, our abilities, and our thrust for the betterment of this great organization.
