Experience Matters
by M. Scott Olson & Dawn Snyder
Candidates for Student Senate President and Vice President
There is serious business to be done, and Student Senate and the student body need serious leaders to do it. Experience is key in this election. It is vital that the future Student Body President and Vice President have knowledge of this campus, its students, and its student government that is both broad and deep. We present UW-Eau Claire students with a choice for Student Body President and Vice President that is unique from the other candidates.
Being involved in student government since 1999, Scott has logged more tenure representing students than all other candidates combined. Currently the Information Technology Commission Director, he and his commission have enhanced students' daily lives. ITC has doubled both the student H-drive space and e-mail capacity. The commission is currently working to extend laptop checkout times. Before coming to UW-Eau Claire, Scott was both Treasurer and Vice President at UW-Barron County.
As Student Senate Secretary, an On-campus Senator, and a Resident Assistant, Dawn brings experience working with both Student Senate and Housing and Residence Life that no other ticket can offer. Dawn is a member of the Academic Affairs Commission, Organizations Commission and the Finance Commission. Through Academic Affairs, she worked to allow research students and other students 24-hour access to Phillips Hall and worked to make military basic training fulfill the Wellness Activity Graduation Requirement.
We want to inform students. Student Senate recently passed a resolution authored by Scott that allows City Council candidates to come and campaign on campus. Having these candidates on campus will help increase student awareness about the election and city council issues. With the current state of community relations, it is essential that students are able to learn about all of the candidates and what they will do for this campus and its students. We were the only ticket that supported this resolution.
We are the only ticket who has experience with all of the Student Senate allocated student fees. Around $4.5 million dollars of student fees are allocated each year. It is incredibly important to have Student Senate leadership with a working-knowledge of how these budget processes work. We have helped to allocate Segregated Fees, Differential Tuition, Student Technology Fees, and we know what these fees can and cannot be spent on.
These are not positions that can be learned in a three-week transitional period. Experience matters! Fresh blood and new ideas are fantastic for Student Senate and welcomed. However, how can someone with no Student Senate experience foster these ideas when he or she has no knowledge of how to make them come to fruition? An essential element of the Student Senate Presidential and Vice Presidential positions is the ability to guide directors and senators in order to help them achieve their potential. We possess this ability and want the only the best for this student body. We have a vision for this campus and the experience to make it reality.
