Every day thousands of pounds of food are wasted. This is perfectly good food being thrown out. In fact, 10% of America's solid waste is food, equaling 46 billion pounds of food discarded every year. At the same time there are over 30 million people in the United States going hungry. And it is not just the homeless. Sixty percent of those hungry are working. This is a national epidemic affecting many more people than we even realize. It would take 4 billion pounds to stop all the hunger in the US. There is food out there that can completely solve the problem. All it will take now is awareness and action.
Food Not Bombs is a completely grassroots organization. We are composed of politically conscious youth who wish to make a difference in the community. Our goal is to provide free food to those in the community facing the clutches of poverty and hunger.
First we will be creating a network with other like-minded people in the community, because we know that power lies in numbers. Secondly, while it is still winter we plan to have a food drive across Eau Claire County. And finally as it starts to warm up, we plan to hold public meals in the park. We will contact local grocery stores, and obtain leftover vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. Then we will cook them up, and have a large feast where anyone can come for free.
