Shouldn't Bike Parking Be Plowed Too?
by Jeremy Gragert
Senior / History Education

Okay, so most of you probably haven't noticed, but some of us REALLY notice the fact that the bike parking areas on campus are never plowed or shoveled by the University. Many days after the snow falls and after the grounds crews have plowed in everyone's cars in the parking lots, (and dusted clean the sidewalks) they feel their jobs are done. They don't seem to notice the hundreds of bikes they buried behind mountains of snow, even if they had run over a bike or two in the process (see photo in Issue 5 of The Flip Side).

The February 12 article in The Spectator addressing the issue of snow removal in parking lots is not new. This University seems to discriminate against cyclists, and cater to the loudest crybabies. No one is particularly enticed to ride their bicycles to school from off campus instead of drive either. Most students, when they do bike to class, can't get over to the locking posts without wading through two feet of snow.

I suppose even my complaint is a pathetic one considering I'm not forced to eat and sleep in a diseased landfill in Bangladesh, but I thought I would make a note of it. I personally believe that at least minimal removal of snow from bike areas should be put on the priority list for snow crews, instead of remaining nonexistent.
