Letter to the Editor: In Response to 'Legality vs. Morality'
by Nicholas Johnson

Written in response to the article "Legality vs. Morality: A Defense of Gay Marriage" by Matthew Konradt, which appeared in The Flip Side Volume 1, Issue 7 (March 3rd - 16th, 2004).

In this article the writer states "Two of the things that make this country great are the separation of church and state and the ability to practice any religion you like. This allows our legal system to operate outside religious morality". One of the most misunderstood things about our government is the idea of separation of church and state. Did you know that this phrase does not appear once in the Constitution? The phrase actually comes from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson on January 1, 1802. The letter was written to the Baptists of Danbury, Connecticut assuring them that no single denomination would prevail for our government.

The whole idea of separation of church and state was not that religion would divorce itself from government/legality, but that no single denomination would overrun America as had happened in England with the Anglican Church. Konradt was right to say that "The U.S. Constitution is built upon the basic principle that 'all men are created equal'", and there is no doubt that the "creator" they had in mind when writing this document was the God of Christianity who is against homosexuality.

"We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education...... We are spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text in our schools.... The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any other manmade book."--Fisher Ames, Congressman and Author of wording for the 1st Amendment

"The Christian religion is, above all religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of wisdom, virtue, equity and humanity."--John Adams, 2nd U.S. President and signer of the Declaration of Independence

"I have carefully examined the evidences of the Christian religion.... I can prove its truth as clearly as any proposition ever submitted to the mind of man."--Alexander Hamilton, "Ratifier of the Constitution"

"If we abide by the principles in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper..."--Daniel Webster, U.S. Congressman, Senator and Secretary of State
